Survival Tips Guide — Vessel Durability, Corruption & the Extraction Loop

A correction first: older versions of this guide described survival stats that don't exist in Grain Rot — hunger, thirst, sanity, diseases, and a day/night cycle. None of those are in the game's confirmed feature set. Grain Rot is an extraction game: you don't manage a character's calories; you manage a vessel's durability, your corruption level, and your extraction discipline. This guide covers the survival skills that actually matter.

What "Survival" Means in Grain Rot

The confirmed survival model has four pillars:

  1. Vessel durability — your wooden body "splinters, collapses, and catches fire." When it breaks, your Spark escapes and must find a new vessel "before you fade out completely."
  2. Corruption — the Rot builds with depth and time. "Bodies warp. Voices distort. Emotes become…worse."
  3. The extraction economy — survival isn't about staying alive; it's about getting loot out. "If everyone breaks, your loot is lost."
  4. Sound discipline — the Corrupted "react to sound, movement, and each other." Surviving means not being noticed.

Pillar 1: Durability Management

Your vessel is your only body in a run. Practical rules:

  • Treat damage as a clock. Every hit brings you closer to the fade window. A heavily damaged vessel is a reason to extract, not to push deeper.
  • Fire is the special hazard. Vessels "catch fire" in a wasteland "where everything burns." Avoid flame hazards — burning bodies degrade fast.
  • Have a fallback plan. Since your Spark can possess another vessel, know where spare bodies might be — but never rely on finding one.
  • Don't die with loot. The vessel is replaceable; the haul isn't.

Pillar 2: Corruption Discipline

Corruption is the game's soft timer:

  • It scales with depth. "The deeper you go, the worse the Rot becomes."
  • It's visible and audible. A corrupted player is a liability the whole team can see.
  • It compounds mistakes. A warped body is harder to control, quieter to fail with.
Survival rule: set a corruption threshold before descending and honor it. When your body is visibly degrading, the run's profit curve has already bent downward — extract.

Pillar 3: Extraction Discipline

The single biggest survival skill is knowing when the run is over:

  • Extract with something rather than die with everything. This is the game's core lesson.
  • The elevator is the only bank. Nothing you carry is yours until you're out.
  • One survivor saves the haul. In co-op, protect the player carrying the most value — if everyone else breaks, they can still bank the run.
  • Greed is the #1 killer. "Just one more room" is how full bags become lost bags.

Pillar 4: Sound Discipline

  • Walk in unknown territory. Sprinting is a beacon.
  • Smash furniture in cleared rooms only. It's your income, and it's loud.
  • Fights recruit. Enemies react to each other — one fight can pull the floor. Fight only when you must.
  • Use distractions. Create noise elsewhere, take the path, leave.

Co-op Survival

  • Designate a Keeper. The most durable player carries the best loot; their job is extraction.
  • Call your state. Announce damage and corruption levels so the team can adjust.
  • Don't all break. Spread the team's risk so one bad room doesn't end the haul.
  • Embrace the chaos, carefully. Dropkicks and griefing are confirmed features — fun when controlled, run-ending when not.

The Demo as Survival Training

The free demo is live and includes the full survival loop. Use it to practice:

  1. Walking instead of sprinting until you feel the noise difference.
  2. Extracting early, repeatedly — build the habit before it matters.
  3. Reading corruption: feel how depth changes your body, voice, and emotes.
  4. The Keeper rhythm in co-op.
Demo progress didn't carry over — the demo is a separate build, and the full game started fresh. The skill does carry over.

The Survival Checklist

Before every descent:

  • [ ] Do I know the way back to the elevator?
  • [ ] Do I know my corruption threshold — and my team's?
  • [ ] Who is the Keeper, and what are they carrying?
  • [ ] What's my plan if a vessel breaks mid-run?
  • [ ] When is this run over — really?
