Extraction Guide — How to Extract Successfully in Grain Rot

Extraction is the make-or-break moment of every Grain Rot run. You can spend twenty minutes stuffing your vessel with the finest loot in the ruins — but if the team breaks before reaching the elevator, all of it is lost. This guide covers the confirmed extraction rules and the strategy that follows.

The Confirmed Extraction Rules

From the official Steam page:

  • The elevator is the way in and the way out. You "ride a cursed elevator into shifting underground ruins."
  • Extraction is the win condition. Official copy: "Make it back alive, then rebuild the Outpost to better your chances for the next run."
  • Loot is lost only when everyone breaks. "If everyone breaks, your loot is lost" — the inverse is the game's most important rule: if even one player extracts, the run was a success (at least for the extraction).
  • The deeper you go, the more you risk and the more you stand to gain. "Go deeper. Extract more."
What's unverified: the specific elevator mechanics — call timers, extraction holds, countdowns, and "fuel" — are not officially documented. Older guides described a 60-second hold with converging enemies; that's plausible but unverified. What is verified is the rule above: extraction is only complete when you're out.

When to Extract: The Decision Framework

The Golden Rule

Extract with something rather than die with everything. Every run is a series of small decisions, and the tiebreaker is always the same: unextracted loot is not loot.

Bail Triggers (Framework, Not Verified Numbers)

  • Your vessel is heavily damaged. A body that "splinters" is one bad room away from breaking.
  • Corruption is high. "The deeper you go, the worse the Rot becomes" — a warped vessel is a liability.
  • The team is down a body or two. Fewer vessels = fewer options.
  • The route back is getting dangerous. Extraction distance is risk; every floor you've descended has to be climbed back.
  • You already have something worth keeping. The marginal value of one more room rarely beats the certainty of what's in your bag.

Pushing Deeper: When It's Worth It

  • When you're fresh — full durability, low corruption, and the elevator route is known.
  • When the team is in agreement. One player wanting to leave while another wants to push is how wipes happen. Decide as a crew.
  • When the reward is real. Deep layers pay better (confirmed principle); push when the specific target justifies the depth.

The Elevator Mindset

Know the Way Back

From the moment you exit the elevator, your first task is understanding the return path. The ruins are procedurally shifting — note landmarks, door patterns, and the floor's structure as you go. Players who can't find the elevator die with full bags.

The Route Is a Resource

  • Don't over-explore the wrong direction. Each branch explored is distance you'll have to re-cover.
  • Mark your mental map as you go. The way down is the way up; if you're not sure you can find the way back, you're too deep.

Extraction Is a Team Event

In co-op:

  • Designate the Keeper. One player (ideally the most durable) carries the highest-value loot. Their job is extraction, not heroics.
  • One survivor is a win. If the team is doomed, everyone covers the Keeper while they run. Their Spark extracts; the haul banks.
  • Never extract-and-abandon by accident. Decide together when the run is over. A team that splits on the call loses the shared haul.

Common Extraction Mistakes

  1. "Just one more room." The most dangerous sentence in extraction gaming. The last room is always where the Corrupted live.
  2. Losing the route. Not knowing the way back to the elevator turns a 30-second sprint into a maze.
  3. Everyone carrying the same value. Split the haul so a single broken vessel doesn't cost the run.
  4. Fighting on the way out. The exit is a race, not a cleanup. Kill only what blocks you.
  5. Ignoring the corruption clock. The longer the run, the worse your bodies get — extraction is also a race against the Rot.

Extraction Training (Demo & Full Game)

The demo and the full game share the full loop — descend, scavenge, extract, rebuild. Practice in either:

  • Extraction under pressure: full bag, damaged vessel, enemies closing.
  • Route memory: can you retrace your path without a map?
  • Team extraction: the Keeper-and-cover rhythm with friends.

What you learn in the demo transfers to the full game — even though your demo unlocks did not carry over.
