Grain Rot Patch Notes & Update History — What Changed in 1.01–1.09 and What's Coming Next
Grain Rot has shipped nine patches since its August 7, 2026 launch — and the two that matter most to how you actually play (a public server browser and a batch of new buildables) landed after most reviews and guides were written. This page is the full, dated update history taken from the developer's own Steam announcements, plus the official roadmap for what is still coming.
Scope note: this page is the version history — what changed and when. The Patch That Changed the Most: 1.07 and the Public Server Browser
This is the single most important line in the whole history, and the one most guides and review summaries still get wrong:
"Public servers are now available to join via an in-game browser." — Patch 1.07, August 12, 2026 (official Steam announcement)
For the first five days of launch, co-op really was invite-only, and the Steam community was loud about it — "as of right now it's invite only making this hard to play," one poster wrote, calling a "matchmaking/lobbylist a must have." Review aggregators from that window still list "No public matchmaking available" as a top negative (VaporLens, data stamped August 8).
Alongside the browser, 1.07 added password-protected servers, more host settings under the multiplayer options tab, friends-of-friends joining (the friends of anyone in the server, not just the host's), and a new hat hidden in the Deep Layers.
If you read that Grain Rot has no way to play with strangers, you are reading launch-week coverage. The feature shipped a month ago — the Multiplayer & Matchmaking Guide has the walkthrough.
The Content Era: 1.08 and 1.09
After the near-daily launch-week hotfixes, the developer slowed down and started shipping features instead of fixes.
Patch 1.08 — August 26
The first real content patch, and the one the roadmap promised ("a batch of new constructs, and a new vessel"):
- Boing, a new small Vessel
- 7 new buildable constructs — 3 common, 1 rare, 1 epic, 2 legendary
- Small Vessels can now carry one item — a meaningful change to how small bodies play
- Grief protection is now a per-player setting you can switch off, limiting harmful actions outside the Deep Layers
- Persistent bans, plus a search filter and a lock icon for password-protected servers
- Wailer got tweaked attack patterns and an extra melee attack; cosmetic spawns in dungeons were cut from 2 to 1
- A long tail of collision and networking fixes (citadel walls, bunkbeds, treasures, construct placement replication)
Patch 1.09 — August 28
The current version, and a smaller quality-of-life patch:
- The compass can now be recalibrated to point toward the Deep Layer grinder — the headline change, and a genuine navigation aid for deep runs
- Vibe Modulator fixed (wrong scrap value) and its visual effect made cheaper to run
- Health and stamina from resting on constructs is now percentage-based rather than a flat amount — which matters more the larger your vessel's pool is
- Fixes for wall-clipping using chairs, and for items saved on an uncontrolled character floating in mid-air
The compass change updates how you plan a descent — see the Weapons & Tools Guide for where it fits in a loadout.
What's Coming Next: The Official Roadmap
The developer published a post-launch plan on August 12, 2026 that still frames where the game is heading. Grain Rot is made by a two-person team (Miche and Nikko, Beck & Branch Games), who explicitly said they prefer goals per month over fixed dates:
| Window | Plan | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Next month (from Aug 12) | A batch of new constructs + a new vessel | ✅ Delivered as Patch 1.08 (Aug 26) |
| September | "The Deep Layers Update" — one new biome and several new enemies | ⏳ Not shipped as of Sep 11 |
| October | "The Halloween Update" — opens the third floor of the Outpost, adds a new questline and seasonal visual updates | ⏳ Planned |
| Ongoing | Fixes, performance work, balancing and quality-of-life updates between the larger drops | ✅ Continuous (1.09 was the latest) |
The roadmap also confirmed the direction behind Patch 1.07: the team was "testing a public lobby browser, alongside improvements to the way friends can join a session," while keeping friends-only and invite-only modes.
Treat the September and October windows as plans, not dates. The developer stays flexible to react to feedback, and as of September 11 no Deep Layers Update had appeared on the announcement feed. How to Check Your Version and Update
- Steam updates Grain Rot automatically. If you have played recently you are almost certainly on 1.09; to force it, right-click the game in your library → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Version mismatches break co-op joins. Everyone updates, then the host restarts the lobby — faster than debugging networking.
- Watch the official Steam announcements for the Deep Layers Update. Every patch is posted there first, with the authoritative change list.
Why some guides look out of date
Third-party patch trackers lag: one widely cited tracker still lists 1.07 as the newest version, and review-summary sites are still surfacing complaint lists built from August 8 data — before the server browser existed. When a guide and the official announcement disagree about Grain Rot, the announcement is right.
FAQ
Q: Is Grain Rot still being updated?Yes. Nine patches shipped between August 8 and August 28, 2026, with 1.09 as the current version. The developer has a published plan through October.
Q: What is the newest Grain Rot update?Patch 1.09 on August 28, 2026 — the compass recalibration plus Vibe Modulator and resting fixes.
Q: Did Grain Rot add a server browser?Yes. Patch 1.07 on August 12, 2026 added public servers joinable through an in-game browser, along with password-protected servers and extra host settings. Coverage saying otherwise reflects the pre-1.07 launch build.
Q: When is the Grain Rot Deep Layers Update? The developer plans it for September 2026 — one new biome and several new enemies. No exact date has been announced, and it had not shipped as of September 11, 2026. The Halloween Update (third Outpost floor, a new questline) is planned for October.
