All Biomes Guide — Every Underground Layer in Grain Rot

What we know about Grain Rot biomes: the 3 demo underground biomes, the 2 new 1.0 biomes, the Deep Layers, procedural shifting ruins, and which layer details are confirmed versus unverified.

All Biomes Guide — Every Underground Layer in Grain Rot

Grain Rot is a horror co-op extraction builder set in a scorched wasteland where "everything burns." The action takes place in procedurally shifting underground ruins reached by a cursed elevator. The full game launched on August 7, 2026; here is exactly what is confirmed about the game's biomes and layers — and what remains unverified.

What Is Confirmed About the Ruins

These facts come directly from the official Steam page and the publisher's press materials:

  • You "ride a cursed elevator into shifting underground ruins with your crew."
  • The ruins are procedurally generated and shift between runs — the official feature list calls out "procedurally shifting underground dungeons."
  • The demo, released June 12, 2026, contains 3 underground biomes.
  • The full 1.0 release added two new biomes beyond the demo's three — confirmed in the publisher's launch announcement. The new biomes' names have not been published in official materials as of this writing; see the Full Release Guide for the complete 1.0 addition list.
  • The deeper you go, the worse the Rot becomes. The official description warns that in "the Deep Layers," bodies warp, voices distort, and emotes degrade.
  • Depth is the game's core risk-reward lever: the official copy literally says "Go deeper. Extract more."
  • Runs have no fixed map: because generation is procedural, every descent is different, though room templates repeat between seeds.

The 3 Demo Biomes

The demo's 3 underground biomes are confirmed to exist, and the names used by players to describe them (widely shared in community coverage) are: The Shallows, The Warrens, and The Depths.

⚠️ Important — names are unverified. Those three names appear in community and fan coverage, but the developers have not published an official biome list with names as of this writing. Treat them as community shorthand. The confirmed facts are:

FactStatus
--------------
3 underground biomes in the demo✅ Confirmed
2 new biomes added at 1.0✅ Confirmed (names unverified)
Biomes appear in a fixed order as you descend❓ Unverified — likely, not stated
Biome names (Shallows / Warrens / Depths)❓ Community coverage only
Specific layer numbers per biome❓ Unverified
Biome-specific loot tables❓ Unverified
Biome-specific enemy rosters❓ Unverified

The Deep Layers

The one named zone in official copy is the Deep Layers — deeper floors where the Rot is strongest. Confirmed details:

  • The Deep Layers are "filled with Corrupted vessels, reacting to sound, movement, and each other."
  • "Rescue survivors trapped in the Deep Layers" is an official feature.
  • The full game's deepest content (and any layer cap) is not officially documented as of this writing.

What Actually Changes as You Descend

Even without an official biome list, the confirmed mechanics tell you what depth does:

  1. Corruption builds faster deeper down — "The deeper you go, the worse the Rot becomes." Corrupted state warps your body, distorts your voice, and degrades your emotes.
  2. Enemy density and threat increase — the Corrupted are concentrated in the Deep Layers.
  3. Loot value increases — the extraction economy only makes sense if deeper floors pay better: "Go deeper. Extract more."
  4. The extraction cost rises — more distance from the elevator means a longer, riskier extraction, and if everyone's vessel breaks, "your loot is lost."

How to Use This Guide Now

The plan for this page is simple: we are replacing the unverified rows above with verified biome names, layer counts, loot tables, and hazard details drawn from in-game testing as that data becomes available. In the meantime, the honest state of knowledge is: 3 demo biomes exist plus 2 more at 1.0, depth scales danger and reward, and every specific name or number is unverified until we can check it in-game.

The demo is still the best free way to see the biome gameplay for yourself — see our demo guide for what it contains. If you want the big picture before your first descent, start with the beginner guide.
